Want to create a vegetable garden but don’t have the room, or don’t want the mess!? This simple beyond the book activity for Lift and Look: Flowers and Plants will have your little one ‘gardening’ in no time.
To make your Pretend Veggie Garden, you’ll need:
- 2 x white paper plates
- paint or markers/ crayons to colour the plates – blue, brown, orange, green
- 1 x piece of plain paper
Paint the first paper plate blue and set aside. Cut the second paper plate in half and paint one of the halves brown. Paint the remaining half orange, and when dry, cut into carrot shapes (or triangles if you’re not feeling too crafty!). Paint or colour some of the plain paper green and when dry, cut into long strips for the carrot stems.
Now it’s time to assemble! Simply staple the brown half plate onto the blue plate as per the picture. Staple the strips of green stem onto the carrot shapes. ‘Plant’ your carrots into the dirt and encourage your little one to ‘dig out’ one at a time. This activity provides a great opportunity to talk about where our food comes from, and the difference between food that grows and food that comes pre-packaged.
